Frequently Asked Questions:

Yoga Therapy

How does yoga therapy differ from a yoga class?

First, and most importantly, the skill level and education to offer “Yoga Therapy” as a C-IAYT requires hundreds of training hours above and beyond most yoga teachers. Even experienced yoga teachers lack much of the specific training required for a yoga therapy certification.

Secondly, yoga therapy is just for you. A regular yoga class is structured in a way that supports group dynamics and group experience. While that itself is a special experience, it isn’t tailor-made to address what each individual needs.

What can I expect in a typical yoga therapy session?

We will spend an hour together working on yoga asana (movement), breathwork, mediation, philosophy, and more. Your first appointment will be an assessment. There are a couple forms to fill out for yoga therapy appointments, and then we will discuss a typical day of movement for your body as well as sleep habits, stress levels, and lifestyle. Yoga therapy is a holistic experience, so we discuss all of this to create a plan that is right for you.

Does Yoga Therapy have a Scope of Practice?

YES!  The “therapy” word can sometimes be confusing. We are not PTs, OTs, psychologists, counselors, nutritionists or any other modality.  While some yoga therapists may offer services in these fields, we do not. We will deal with your health, healing, and wellness only as it relates to yoga and can be informed from the full spectrum of yoga’s offerings.

The International Association of Yoga Therapists’ official scope of practice.

Do I need a referral?

No.  I do ask that all clients be released from their regular healthcare practitioners before engaging in yoga therapy.

Do you refer to other health professionals?

Yes! If a client comes with a challenge that isn’t under my jurisdiction, so to speak, and cannot be addressed with yoga I most certainly will.

Can I take regular yoga classes while also doing yoga therapy?

You bet! In fact, our yoga therapy membership at Sunlight offers the best of both of these worlds.

How much does a session cost?

We believe that yoga therapy is best experienced in a series, not a one-off session. We offer two bundles:

  • 3 sessions for $320

  • 5 session bundle for $425.

If you’re looking for the full experience of private, personalized Yoga Therapy as well as accessible drop-in classes, our most comprehensive experience is our Yoga Therapy Membership. This includes one private Yoga Therapy session as well as 4 studio yoga classes for $160 per month, or unlimited classes and yoga therapy for $195 per month. This is a three-month commitment, auto-billed monthly.

Is there a cancellation policy?

Yes, 24 hours notice, please. We do not require prepayment at this time, but if last-minute cancellation becomes an issue, prepayment will be required to book future sessions.
